The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:1-4I love the promises that are made to us in the 23rd Psalm. I love the comfort they bring and the peace they portray.
I remember learning these verses at a very young age and not entirely understanding their meaning. I remember having to memorize the words and I think we even put the verses to song. That being said, these words are forever engraved in my mind. I am so appreciative of this, the many school hours spent memorizing and creating, so that I can now recall these words. And now that I'm older, and I hope a bit wiser, I can apply them to my life. I can also now say that they are forever engraved in my heart.
Heart vs. mind. What's the difference? I say it is a big difference. We can know a lot of things, but to feel them is completely different. I know names and faces, but the way those names and faces make me feel is a different story. I know lyrics and pitch and sound, but the way the music makes me feel is a million times better.
Knowing these verses and understanding them are important, but feeling the comfort they bring and the peace they carry is so vital to their meaning for us.
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 2 Corinthians 4:16-17
